Well, the gate has been closed on the Stargate franchise...for now anyway. It was announced today via Twitter that Syfy has cancelled Stargate Universe after only two seasons. This coming shortly after the BSG spin-off Caprica being cancelled. The remaining ten episodes will air in the spring.
This really sucks to be honest. I've been a Stargate fan for many years now, mostly Stargate SG1, and to a much lesser extent, Stargate Atlantis. And while this season of SGU has been losing me a bit, The first season was great. Plus, the show was moving into a somewhat interesting direction, a direction which will probably never be resolved{unless MGM decides to put out a Direct To DVD movie}. I also think that the way Syfy handled the cancellation was terrible. Apparently none of the actors were informed of the cancellation, and thus found out via Twitter, which is a HORRIBLE way to find out you're out of a job.
On the other hand, this news isn't all that surprising. The show has been averaging around 1 million viewers a week, and the move to Tuesdays nights didn't help at all.
Of course, I doubt this is the end of the Stargate franchise. After all, Stargate is MGM's biggest franchise behind James Bond, and even if Syfy doesn't want any more SG series, I'm sure MGM will want to exploit it beyond television. The next two Direct To DVD movies, Stargate: Extinction and Stargate: Revloution, have been on hold for some time now due to MGM's money problems. If those ever do get made{which hopefully they will}, maybe we could see a SGU movie at some point to tie up the series.
